Trained in business administration and educated in gerontology with expertise in health and housing policy for aging societies, Yuriko Araki earned a MA degree in gerontology from Simon Fraser University in 2004. Her thesis examined the extent to which the clients and services in assisted living settings in British Columbia were consistent with the policy goals of the new Community Care and Assisted Living Act.
Yuriko has worked for a broad range of research projects in the past six years in Canada. From 2003 - 2004, she was a graduate trainee in the Partners in Community Health Research (PCHR) program, funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research and the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. As part of the learning activities of the program, she worked on issues pertaining to primary health care reform in an interdisciplinary team of academic researchers, community health workers and senior administrative staff of a regional health authority.
From 2004 - 2005, Yuriko joined a research team for conducting a policy review of the governance of medical devices, health technology and patient safety in the UK and Japan, funded by Health Canada. Fluent in both English and Japanese, she presented research findings at international conferences and assisted visiting scholars from Asian countries with reviewing the Canadian health and housing policies and collecting data.
Actively involved in knowledge exchange between scholars, community health workers and family caregivers, Yuriko co-organized the First International Conference on Creative Expression, Communication and Dementia advocating innovative dementia care through creative expression and communication in May of 2005.
Through these research projects and educational activities, Yuriko became interested in assisting with the exchange of technical and research expertise between Canada and other countries, particularly in Asia. With this vision and dedication, shaped through 18 years of international work experience in a variety of fields (health care research, telecommunication, education and business), Yuriko founded ACT (Asia Canada Transforming) Health Care in the summer of 2005.
